Progress in Focus: IDB Vice Chairman’s Visit Addresses Key Steps in Bangsamoro Normalization

Cotabato City, BARMM – On 24 February 2025, Vice Chairman Mr. William Hovland of the Independent Decommissioning Body (IDB) had an official visit to Cotabato City, key discussions were held separately with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front – Joint Normalization Committee (JNC) Co-Chair Minister Akmad “Toks” Brahim and the MILF Peace Implementing Panel (MILF-PIP) Head of Secretariat Assistant Senior Minister Engr. Mohajirin T. Ali, MNSA, shedding light on the progress and challenges of the Bangsamoro peace process.
The Vice Chairman conveyed greetings from IDB Chairman HE Suat Akgün. During the meeting with the MILF-JNC, discussions centered on the ASPIRE-SALW initiative, the extension of the LNI project, and the implications of the rescheduled BARMM parliamentary elections. Emphasis was placed on enhancing security measures, particularly in addressing DPAGs and ensuring adequate socio-economic support for the final phase of decommissioning.
The MILF side reaffirmed its readiness to proceed with decommissioning once the Peace Panels give the signal, contingent upon progress on socio-economic aspects. The IDB reiterated its commitment to the peace process, expressing wishes for a successful Bangsamoro election and emphasizing the importance of maintaining operations and support.
